The IAA Space Debris & Sustainability Conference

The IAA Space Debris & Sustainability Conference, co-hosted by EPFL and The University of Hong Kong’s Laboratory for Space Research (HKU-LSR), will be held at HKU’s main campus from 2 – 4 December 2024.
This multi-day event aims to foster global collaboration on space debris mitigation and sustainability, bringing together leading experts and stakeholders to discuss critical issues related to space sustainability, debris mitigation, and the international regulation of low-Earth orbit (LEO).

Attendees will gain access to the latest trends, insights, and opportunities related to space sustainability. Major themes and questions include the scale of the threat, risks and costs; mitigation processes and technologies; data collection and sharing; international regulation of LEO; public awareness and the threat to ground-based astronomy; and the economics of active debris remediation.
EPFL, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, is renowned for its innovation and excellence in natural sciences and engineering. The HKU-LSR, strategically positioned in Asia, engages in interdisciplinary research and develops strategic partnerships with leading space science institutes. The conference will feature keynote introductions by UNOOSA Director, Ms. Aarti Holla-Maini, and will include a partnership with the Three Countries Trusted Broker (TCTB) group to address space debris concerns.
